Cloud Atlas - book review. And food.

[livejournal.com profile] catsgomiaow recommended & loaned me Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell (as part of 101 things book-recommendation thing).

It took a while to get into - you don't really get any explanation of what's going on in the book until halfway through or thereabouts, and I tend to get impatient about that sort of thing. It repaid perseverance, though - by halfway through I had at least noticed the connections. The dialect of the story that runs across the middle of the book was a bit hard to read, but again worth it. The start/end one was probably the one I enjoyed least.

The time-skipping leaves a lot of questions about what happened in between (particularly with the parts that are future-set), but in a good way. I did enjoy the interweaving of the stories, in the end (i.e. once I figured out what was going on), and he writes very well.

Recommended!

Also I cooked kale puttanesca for [livejournal.com profile] uon & myself last night. Although without the anchovies, obv, & without the olives because we didn't have any. It was very nice, although another time I'd chop the capers up as they were a bit alarming whole.
