Ug

Back from holiday, which was Much Fun, although I now have a hideously large quantity of bruises. Snowboarding++, although it would be better if I was less of a Big Wuss & thus more prepared to go at speed. Next year... We also went on a very brief husky sledge trip ([livejournal.com profile] kitty_goth overturned the sledge when he was driving. I managed not to :-) ), which was *ace*. Huskies are lovely. And assorted other stuff. The torchlit descent one evening by the ski/snowboard school instructors was impressive, & v pretty especially as it was a clear night so the stars were all out as well. Getting utterly plastered at Popcorn was less of a good thing, especially the next morning :-) Secret House Cocktails: just say no, kids.

Sadly, despite nice holiday, I appear to still be utterly knackered, & not really up to form generally. I was hoping to go to BU this evening, but I think a QNI is instead called for - the 'socialising' concept is a slightly scary one atm. I'm starting to get slightly irritated with this: I feel like I've been slightly down/antisocial for a while now, & I'm not desperately keen on it. Maybe it's just a winter thing, and will lift soon.

I know it's irrational but I got really, really annoyed with King Rat simply because of the way Mieville capitalises the names of musical genres...
It suffers by comparison with his later books, but taken on its own merits it is indeed quite good.

It's a minor annoyance it's true and your right that it doen't compare to The Scar or Perdido(sp) St Station, I found Iron Council a little less enjoyable though, only a couple of the characters had the flesh on them you expect from Mieville.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Iron Council. I suspect it may indeed have flaws such as those to which I was blinded by the sheer wealth of invention on display. Though I did find the golemist - Judah, was that his name? - fascinating too.

he was the only fully fleshed out character, he was very good but you expect more from the suppporting munchkins, the Brucolac(sp) (vampire guy) in The scar is a perfect example, fully fleshed and interesting.

I thought the wispersmith was quite good but he decended into David Gemmel territory quite quickly.

I've never managed more than a sentence of Gemmel, so can't really comment...
