Hunting Bill

(information from [livejournal.com profile] arkady - can't yet find anything online & don't have a radio/TV here)

Update: Below does not seem to be accurate after all, according to folk watching it on Parliament Live. Bother. So back to keeping thumbs crossed....

Further update: Hurrah, it has now passed after all. Yay.

The Hunting Bill has passed with a majority of 182.

Hurrah.

(though it's not over yet, etc - I *assume* it was passed with the 18 month delay in implementation, but it's likely that the Lords won't pass the Bill which I believe means it would go back to the original 3-month delay in implementation. And that's assuming they use the Parliament Act, though I can't imagine that they would go through all the kerfuffle of bringing it back & then *not* use the PA).

Still hurrah :-)

Hurrah!

[identity profile] catsgomiaow.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!! :)

[identity profile] azureskies.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah indeed. The sight of those protestors today made my blood boil. Oh, for a really, really, really large canister of poison gas.

Better yet - why didn't someone get a pack of rabid dogs and unleash them outside Westminster?

[identity profile] vigornian.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to say I won't hear anything against anybody's right to protest their own point of view around Westminster, in particular on something on which there's clearly a whole range of valid opinions. It's difficult enough in general for some people to make their voice heard when they're in a minority or when they see themselves as disenfranchised from the modern urban thrust of the political mainstream. It's even more difficult if those in a similar position - even if on an issue which others might funamentally disagree with like we have here with the pro-hunters - are not seen as having a right to protest.

[only slightly /trolling]

[identity profile] azureskies.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I wouldn't call that trolling. It's a fair point. Reason would agree with you. But reason's not something that comes into play with regards to a lot of people's feelings over this issue.

And bursting into the House of Commons like a prat certainly isn't a useful or valid means of protest. That just doesn't help either side.

[identity profile] vigornian.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't realised they'd done that (I'm so half past twelve...). I agree, what twats.

But do you support Reclaim The Streets?

[identity profile] ciphergoth.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] spikeylady has turned Parliament TV on over here, and the debate seems to be continuing - it's second reading. I'm not sure this is right.

[identity profile] lovelybug.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Err, are you sure? They're doing the second reading at the moment - don't think the debate is over yet, and my understanding is that all that goes before the free vote. I've been watching parliament live - the commons getting invaded by protesters was fun.

[identity profile] arkady.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've updated my post; I got the initial information from the BBC News website which mentioned it in the "Latest" section until 17:15 but didn't clarify that this was only the vote for pushing the Bill through in one day. So blame the BBC for not giving us the whole story properly!

[identity profile] beingjdc.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't we doing all three readings in one day or something, for the first time since the war measures act 1940 or whatever?

[identity profile] arkady.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
They had to vote first to actually do that. Seems that before Parliament can even debate on something it has to take a vote on what way to debate....

[identity profile] beingjdc.livejournal.com 2004-09-16 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Shocker.

[identity profile] azureskies.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I tell you what, if anyone in the Commons was on the fence, those tossers who got inside will have done plenty to sway them!

Way to cause harm to your own cause, chaps!

[identity profile] thekumquat.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouting abuse at passers-by and the police, and throwing bottles, and getting really drunk in all the pubs around Westminster, won't help either.

[just walked from St James's back to Millbank]

[identity profile] arkady.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm currently watching the BBC News Live newsstream online; the debate finished a couple of minutes ago and the MPs are now voting; result expected to be announced at 6pm.

[identity profile] arkady.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Vote result has just been announced: 356 For, 166 Against.

I'm sure that will make you happy....

[identity profile] ottah.livejournal.com 2004-09-15 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent - news to cheer me up :)
