Just back from holiday, which was fun - update to follow.

In the meantime: the Hunting Bill has finally been reintroduced to the Commons, & the debate is on Wednesday 15th. Please email your MP to ask them to be present on Wednesday to vote in favour of the Bill and against any delay in implementation. Further details on the League website at that link.

NB I am really not terribly interested in any debate on here as to whether hunting should be banned or not. I believe, very strongly, that it should - if you agree with me, *please* email your MP. Even if you know they're pro-ban, it's still vital that you email them to make sure they attend the debate on Wednesday.

Hunting Bill? Why would we want to hunt Bill? What has he done?

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week.

Delay in implementation

If you can be interested in technical details of parliamentary procedure, rather than a sterile rehearsal of arguments for or against the ban, note that the bit of the Parliament Act allowing the Commons to put forward a small amendment (like the two-year delay here) has never yet been invoked. Exciting, no?

If I understand things correctly, the Commons can force the Lords to debate the amendment, but can't actually enact it without the Lords' co-operation (and all factions in the Lords are showing the co-operative instincts of a farrow of piglets about this bill). It's very unlikely actually to become law, though you can see why Labour's election strategists might want to try.

Excellent. With a bit of luck the Lords will then throw it back at the Commons, wasting more Parliamentary time and pushing far, far more insidious Bills like the odious Blunkett's ID Card Bill further down the order.
