Shiny morning

Gorgeous morning - was rather irritated that for logistical reasons to do with parent-visiting tonight I had to take the tube in so didn't get to cycle. The view out of my window today is superb - the Eye in particular is catching the sun on all its little cars & sparkling rather in the manner of a *really big* diamond ring. Mornings like this I am particularly fond of London; though bizarrely I was also feeling pretty fond of it yesterday whilst cycling home in the rain. It was a good run, though, despite the rain - no wind, & just the right temperature for pleasant cycling.

'Particularly fond of' doesn't cut it, to be fair. I adore London, & always have. I grew up here (albeit out in the suburbs), & I always knew during my 5 years in Oxford that I'd be coming back. It's beautiful even when it's grey and rainy, and more so when the sun shines; it's covered in parks, and sudden glorious bits of architecture that you come across unexpectedly; and even the grotty bits have interest once you start paying attention. It's busy, and interesting, and even though I'd like to try living elsewhere (overseas for a bit), I can't imagine ever wanting my *home* to be anywhere else. Wonderful city.

In other news, I have acquired an SD card for my Treo so that it can be an MP3 player. Unfortunately, it seems that putting stuff onto a 512MB card via the hotsync takes *much longer* than putting stuff onto a 32MB card (either that or it's something to do with the card itself, I suppose). As in, 8 hrs for 22 songs. Halfway through last night I cracked & bought an SD reader for the Mac (only 16quid, mind) to enable me to do this faster. I am a Bad Juliet & must put the credit card away for the rest of the month now.

Which reminds me: does anyone have the Levellers' cover of 'Devil Went Down To Georgia' on MP3?

My cycle along the canal was indeed lovely this morning (and not just because I saw a KITAN). It's not often I wake up, look out of the window and think "Yess! I don't have to get the tube today!"

Treo hotsync is slow at transferring data, it only runs at mundane serial port speeds. Note that on the Treo end, in the Hotsync application, you can change the serial speed. I think the default is a rather pathethic 19200bps, you ought to be able to run it at the maximum 115200bps (IIRR). That's still not nearly USB speeds, though.

I was glad I could cycle to work this morning, when I looked out of the window. I went to the garden and found a surprise harvest of ripe tomatoes waiting for me too! But then when I was half way to work the wind hit me and threatened to push me back home again. Still, if it doesn't change then I'll have a nice tailwind on the way home.

Your post inspired me to open the blinds on my window, I now have a splendid view of the "gherkin" and Tower 42 glistening in the sun. Thanks! They are a few kilometres west of me though, and out of the other window I can see Canary Wharf, in silhouette at the moment. In the afternoon, Canary Wharf will be all golden in the setting sun, it can be beautiful at times. However, they can also be a warning - if I can't see any of those buildings from here, it usually means that it's raining too hard to cycle home!

i could have sworn that london was one of the most ridiculously congested and expensive cities in the world and crime ridden to boot. nightlife apart, the best thing about london is the tube and that's what everyone in london spends half of their life moaning about. good place for a weekender though. as far as parks are concerned portland pisses all over everywhere else i've been from a great height, but even cleveland is on par with london. i'll take any big city except birmingham, cleveland and philadelphia over london.
