*nod*, I think the mateship thing is about ordinary people supporting each other through difficult times, and if being in a war isn't a difficult time, I don't know what is. And there's a sense of anti-TPTB in it, because you go to war and kill people because TPTB want you to, but because you're supporting your mates. Which, OK, has some toxicness built in (when I was a kid we called it peer pressure), but I think it's less toxic than "my country, right or wrong".
