DIY, oh yes

The weekend was Busy, consisting as it did of much DIY-type shenanigans. This time, mostly not our DIY, but [livejournal.com profile] marnameow & [livejournal.com profile] sbp's.

Pete & I collected the van on Friday night & proceeded directly to meet [livejournal.com profile] marnameow at Ikea, where the customary Hell ensued. The main problem was that the mattress Marna wanted was in stock, but only on a higher shelf, & they were refusing to get it down because this would require getting the fork-lift truck out. "Come back tomorrow," they said. "Not on your life," we said. Eventually was sorted out by the aid of a Very Nice Woman at the full service desk. Finally got back to Bermondsey around 2230, & consumed much pizza. I continue to hate Ikea, if anyone were in any doubt.

We spent Saturday removing assorted detritus & the old wardrobes from Marna & Sean's bedroom (well, I retreated from the wardrobe-removing, myself, & went back to ours to do paint-related activities for a bit); painting the walls; constructing furniture; and putting rubbish in the van. Sunday featured further furniture-construction; Marna & my trip to buy wood (both of us wish to build landing bookshelves) from the wood-shop & Stuff from B&Q; and more moving of rubbish into the van. The fun part of this was throwing the old mattress off the stairwell balcony, which cheered me greatly. And then Pete & I had to clean the rats out yesterday evening, & I also managed to sort out the cupboard-under-the-stairs which is now all organised & stuff.

This morning involved getting up hideously early to visit the tip (vans not allowed in at weekends). There was a somewhat sticky moment on arrival when the bloke on the gate refused to believe that we were domestic people & thought we were trade (this would involve paying Large Sums for rubbish disposal). Some scrabbling around by Sean & myself in bags & wallets led to us presenting proof-of-address to the tune of: one credit card application (me); one 2004 Glastonbury ticket (Sean). Thankfully the supervisor chap decided to believe us (possibly *due* to the crapness of our attempts to prove ourselves - theoretically, of course, our residency in the borough wasn't at issue, but rather the provenance of the rubbish), and helped us unload the lot (including a bed & no fewer than 5 monitors) into a Big Shovel Thingy.

The weekend also featured a visit to Subversion, which was fun, but I was still feeling pretty rough (been sniffly/sore-throated all week) & also knackered, so wasn't exactly on form. My apologies for being less than scintillating company.
