Surfing: I had an *awesome* couple of hours surfing on Thursday, by which I mean: I caught 90% of the waves I went for (I was in the white-water bits, rather than out the back with the proper surfers) & got onto my feet maybe 80% of the time. I did not always *stay* on my feet, mind. It is a serious amount of fun, although I'm fairly sure I'm not travelling as fast as I think I am; I can totally understand why people get hooked. There's a lot of reasons why I'm going to be sad to leave Sydney (if I were footloose & fancy-free, as it were, I'm not sure I'd be heading home, and certainly not in May), but the proximity to the ocean & specifically to decent surfing beaches is a big one. Anyone up for a weekend down in Cornwall when I get back?

Georgette Heyer: Aw, man, GH rocks. Sure, it's lightweight fluff, but it's well-written, and I have a well-established soft spot for well-written lightweight fluff. Also a great fondness for the Regency period.

Hair vs no hair: A #1 or #2 is incredibly easy to look after, and was a godsend whilst actually on the Trans-Sib, but I fear it did make me look a bit like a convict. (It certainly got me a lot of funny looks.) More hair can get a bit hot, though (at least when it's as thick as mine); but there's more of it to be worth dying interesting colours. I'm quite pleased with the current length, now that I've accepted that it requires hairgel (Lush do hairgel!) to avoid the Hedgehog Look. Needs cutting fairly often, though, bah.

Teepees: BEST THING EVER. (NB my "best thing ever" list is actually quite long.) You can stand up in them! And light a fire in them! And in certain, ahem, frames of mind, you can light a candle & lie on your back and look upwards, and then the flickering on the poles & the rain-catcher at the top makes the teepee into a SPACESHIP flying through galaxies! I have never had this experience in a nylon Gerber 3-person dome tent.

Why I Like Musicals: Because they are awesome, obviously. I like music, and I like stories, and musicals are both at once. I think this is partly childhood conditioning: we used to have tapes of various musicals on in the car when driving to the South of France on holiday, and Wendy and I would sing. (Possibly Mum & Dad did too, but they were in the front so hard to hear.) Musicals were probably my first theatre-going experiences other than panto, as well; I remember seeing Jesus Christ Superstar at the Churchill, aged hmm, 8 or 9? (I didn't like the crucifixion scene; I knew the album well but that bit wasn't on it, and it was pretty graphic...) And we did Oliver! and Joseph as school productions at my primary school (I was in the pit band for both). Les Mis is probably still my favourite; also very fond of Evita, Cats, & Superstar. Didn't rate Phantom much, hated Miss Saigon (too depressing). Still sad that the Hunting of the Snark musical got cancelled before the date of our tickets! I also adore Return to the Forbidden Planet, which I have seen, um, 5 times; and Rocky Horror and Little Shop of Horrors, but I think of them as slightly different sorts of musicals. ([livejournal.com profile] dogrando & I saw the stage version of LSOH for Valentine's, once, back before I stopped doing Valentine's. Aww.)
