On my way home on my bike tonight, intending to drop past the allotment for a bit, cycling happily along Birdcage Walk. Whereupon suddenly my saddle vanished from under me, & I fought hard to stay upright long enough to brake, & also to fall to the left (onto dirt, albeit stony) rather than road (hard, also higher likelihood of getting squished). Was successful, but ploughed into said dirt pretty hard. Now in possession of exciting array of grazes & a wrist which I think may need to go to Casualty. Am typing one-handed.

It transpired that the thing on the top of the seat-post that holds the saddle on had sheared off. Exciting. As one of the nice cyclists who stopped to assist me said, cycling in London you worry about getting hit by something, but not about your bike falling apart under you. A police dog van (explosive sniffer dogs!) also stopped, & produced their first-aid kit so I could mop up a bit - they were v helpful & worried about whether I'd get home OK. One of the cyclists pointed me at Action Bikes nr St James' (& hurrah for them, who sorted me out on the spot with a new seat-post, & twisted my front wheel back where it belonged, & didn't charge for labour), & the other one told me she was a physio, & to watch the wrist & think about taking it to Casualty. It's got worse since then, so I will eat dinner & then probably go there.

Anyway. Boo. May not be at pub, unless A&E have become *really* efficient, but the rest of you shd go anyway.

Ben has brought me WINE & Pete is cooking dinner. Lovely boyfriends!

Yay for your boyfriends, and hope the wrist isn't too badly injured!

Eek! That is a nasty thing to break on a bike - kudos to you for being able to stop the bike in a semi-controlled way which didn't do too much damage to you given what could've happened.

Hope the wrist is only sprained and not something worse.

Ouch! I hope your wrist turns out to be ok, but things could have been worse - a poster on a forum a frequent had the handlebars detatch from his bike as he was cycling in front of a bus!

Get Well Soon! And yay for nice passersby: people were lovely to me when I had my nasty bump too and helped me get to the doctors across the road.

I think that's what the boyfriends are hoping too...

Yer, nasty bike scenario, but funnily enough all my major bike traumas have been due to incompetence or mechanical failure, I've always managed to survive that due to other traffic fairly unharmed.

get well soon, etc.

I used to keep a slightly squashed bike helmet to remind me to wear one; that happened after my handlebars sheared on one side. Catastrophic mechanical failure can happen, and does; it's interesting to think how many bits of a bike can break and you don't get hurt... (not many)

Hope you're back to 100% soon.

Ow ow ow!

That sounds wretched! Hope this morning finds you feeling better, though I suspect you're feeling bruised in all of the wrong ways.
