1. What did you do in 2025 that you'd never done before?

Had someone move out of a house I was still living in (previous moves have always involved everyone moving at the same time). Pete is now living in Folkestone with Marna. Pretty massive change given that we'd been living together for 24 years; it still feels a little odd.
Also a specific piece of personal admin which I am still ambivalent about but which was undoubtedly the sensible thing to do.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

My not-resolutions-more-aims hit rate this year: definitely achieved 5; mostly/partly achieved 8; didn't achieve 4/17 (0.29 : 0.47 : 0.24). Worst in a long time! But it has been something of a year, between the move and other things.

2024: 0.47 : 0.24 : 0.29
2023: 0.65 : 0.12 : 0.24
2022: 0.75 : 0.05 : 0.2
2021: 0.67 : 0.17 : 0.17
2020: 0.65 : 0.22 : 0.13
2019: 0.58 : 0.24 : 0.17
2018: 0.72 : 0.17 : 0.11

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

My friend Elaine's (adult) kid had a baby, they're the only one I can think of.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Sidney T. Hund. She was very nearly 16, and had been finding life more and more difficult for a while. It was definitely the right time, and it happened at home and peacefully (with the aid of the vet), but it was still very sad and I still miss her.

A friend's (adult, early 20s) child died by suicide. Their youngest sibling J is a close friend of L's. I can't say much that's meaningful in this format; it's a devastating and awful thing to have happened.

5. What countries did you visit?

None.

6. What would you like to have in 2026 that you lacked in 2025?

An agent. More gentleness-to-myself.

(Last year I wanted: An agent (still working on that then...). A sense of being more relaxed about the things I'm doing even if I'm doing the same amount of them (which I've done a bit, I think).)

7. What date from 2025 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Sid died 26th Feb.
Pete moved out 2nd Oct.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Getting through it; supporting people who needed supporting.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Did not manage to finish the book I've been working on all year. Nearly finished though!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Food poisoning just before Xmas! But nothing major.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I cannot think of anything in particular...
possibly the new stuff for L's NEW ROOM (he moved into the attic now Pete is no longer in it, and we did a whole bunch of cleaning & redecorating in about a fortnight).

BangFace tickets maybe?

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Lovely friends, doop, L, Pete.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

it's still: various people/public figures being horrible.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Therapy. Books. Buying Pete's bit of the house off him, but that's doop's money really and also such a ridiculous sum that it doesn't feel like spending *money* somehow, it's just imaginary figures.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

It has not been that sort of year.
I did have a lovely time at BangFace.

16. What song will always remind you of 2025?

Can't think of one!

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? Slightly fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? About the same, depending on how you count the balance between house & cash.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Chilling the fuck out, in general.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

I wish that there had been less of a need for offering emotional support, but given that it was needed I don't wish I'd done less of it.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Slightly different this year because no Pete & Marna! (L & I went to visit them a couple of days before Christmas). But still in Bermondsey as usual, with doop and L; and had my parents & sister over on Boxing Day. I strongly prefer Christmas to be extremely laid back.

21. Did you fall in love in 2025?

No.

22. How many one-night stands?

None.

23. What was your favorite TV programme?

Possibly Heated Rivalry. But possibly also This Life except it feels silly to count that given how old it is.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Don't think so.

25. What was the best book you read?

Hmm maybe The Incandescent by Emily Tesh, but I'm not sure. I am bad at remembering what I've read; also this year I've read a lot of very lightweight stuff that doesn't need much thinking about.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Not sure I have discovered anything.

27. What did you want and get?

The household rearranging being relatively calm and orderly and everyone staying on good terms and all that. I didn't actually think it would be otherwise but I'm glad it went as it did. (Other than everything being TOO SLOW, but that is par for the course with house-purchases. Honestly don't know wtf the lawyers were DOING with their time but there we go.)

28. What did you want and not get?

Sid to live forever (happily and with working legs).

29. What was your favourite film of this year?

I enjoyed the latest Knives Out film.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 47, and I did nothing much, because Sid wasn't well enough for a party.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Oh I don't know. I would have various things be different if I could but that's not quite the same thing.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2025?

Jeans and a shirt.

33. What kept you sane?

Naps. Although I needed them less once I was no longer up repeatedly in the night with Sid, bless her.
Therapy.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

None.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

Many things.

36. Who did you miss?

maia. Richard. Sid. It was weird for a while with Pete not being around but I have adjusted.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

Not sure I did!

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2025

Last year I said: sometimes you just have to do the thing.
This year I would say: sometimes you just have to decide not to do the thing.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year

??

40. Did you enjoy this year?

Not enormously. There have been good bits. L continues wholly delightful, and is enjoying life and getting ENORMOUS and teenager-y, and all that sort of thing. In general though a lot of it felt very things-are-about-to-change (we knew from the start of the year that Sid didn't have that much longer; we knew Pete would be moving after that; it didn't actually all shift until October) which I don't deal well with tbh. And some things were just awful. So it goes, I guess.
