From where is it currently recommended to buy CDs etc online? (I am trying to avoid Amazon for vague anti-large-monopoly type reasons). NB I do want an actual physical CD not just MP3 download.

Making a recommendation depends on what you want really...

Or if it's something you can get via the artist's website, I'd get it that way :-)

I've ordered from play.com and tescos without trouble in the past.

I buy almost all my non-Classical CDs from Norman Records (http://www.normanrecords.com), an independent mail-order shop based in Leeds.

But she's already avoiding Amazon! You can't have two monopolies at once...

I just froogle and see what comes up, personally, and take my chances. It'll all go wrong eventually.

If it's a nindie label, try looking at their site and see if they sell CDs?

I want this. Lots of land and enough room for a commune and near the seaside.

I like the secondhand Amazon sellers thingy. Not sure what sort of a cut they take, but to my mind it's not dissimilar to paying a small shop with Switch.

Are Amazon a monopoly?

I have had reasonable experiences with play.com but they are a big company. Usually cheaper than amazon but not always. However they do send everything in separate packages which is a little wasteful.

For gothy/bleepy CDs I support music non stop because they put stuff back into the alternative scene (sponsor infest etc) so I buy from them where they sell it. [Also they've been totally excellent about refunds in the past including simply taking my word that something didn't arrive two months after it was sent -- it took me two months to notice.]

Only a personal recommendation but I still really like Play -- they're cheap, very speedy with the delivery, and have a pretty good selection of stock. No idea about how they square up to Amazon in terms of ethics, I'm afraid, but I've not heard anything dubious about them. (Also, FWIW, a friend of mine works for them and they seem to be reasonably good as employers!)

Oh and (looking at yr other comments) I admit that their separate packages policy is wasteful, but a) I reuse their conveniently-sized jiffy-bags for eBay selling etc., and b) (selfishly) it's heaps more convenient for me because it means that a CD or DVD will go through the letterbox, so the postman doesn't leave them on the doorstep / in the bin / etc. and I don't have to trek out to the post office depot to pick them up...

If I'm pretending I can come up with £750,000, I can easily stretch it to a bit more to cover building a few more cottages! And use the big building as the communal bit of the commune.

Thing is, 6 or 7 people could in theory get a mortgage based on our current earnings, which we mostly wouldn't have if we had a farm. And we wouldn't be making money from having the farm for at least a while.

There's probably space enough that we could share it while we built some more houses or converted some barns.

Phone local indie music shop and ask them to order it if it's not in stock, trot down when convenient or ask if they'll post it?

It is possible that there may be tax advantages from sending items in separate packages, since I think that play.com is one of the retailers who sells items from Jersey. Jersey does not charge VAT on purchases, and for shipments into the UK which are of sufficiently low value (below the Low Value Consignment Relief threshold, €22 in the UK), UK VAT doesn't have to be charged either. So, if sending separate packages keeps each individual shipment below the threshold, this may make the best of the tax arrangements.

(I am not a tax expert: this suggestion is based on Wikipedia and a half-heard item on Radio 4 in the last couple of days.)
