I really must post soon about what should have been a weekend update but has developed into a week one.

However! First, I am in Organised Mood & wish to arrange things.

1) marnameow & I decided at TM pints on Tuesday that it is high time that kitty_goth learnt to like Buffy. As a result, tomorrow evening we plan to force him to watch from the start of S1 until he cracks & admits that it's good. Also, this means we get Buffy-fest, hurrah. Current other attendees for this include Pete, sbp, & atommickbrane. Anyone else fancy it? Marna: your place or mine? Am happy to host, but do not have widescreen, also your sofa *is* bigger.

2) Glastonbury is fast approaching (hurrah!) & it may sound a bit early, but it's probably time to start booking transport. (especially since I'm away week after next which is probably when I'd normally book.) Pete & I will be catching the shiny train on Thursday morning (reasonably early) & back again Monday morning (as early as possible). Anyone else planning on catching train & wish to come with us? For travelling en masse is more fun, clearly.

I am writing this lying out in the garden, as I am working from home today & am damned if I'm missing all the lovely sunshine by sitting at the dining-room table. Hurrah.

You can only book seats on the way there, yes? Count me in. I may not leave as early as you, but I can tag along with an appropriate sub-set of the kittens if necessary. [Kittens being much easier to maintain in herds than be collected into them initially IYSWIM]

What exactly is it about Buffy that encourages this televangelism? My mother's been trying to get me to watch it for years, some close friends of ours keep trying to slip the DVDs in our luggage whenever we go to stay - and yet so far we've resisted (I don't think DH and I have space in our lives for yet another obsession so we're not willing to risk it!). It's like there are Buffy pushers lurking around every corner...

Do you have any idea how long it takes to watch all of Buffy? We're talking days here. I've still not seen about two thirds of series 6 and any of series 7, do you happen to know when you might be getting to them?

We can Buffums up at my place, if you wish. My house is chaos though, and likely to be as chaotic tomorrow as it is today. You surely don't *mind* that, do you?

There's some kind of restriction, yes... If we actually book seats, chances are that this will commit you to a certain train. I'll investigate traintimes & stuff & confirm before going ahead, though, fear not.

Let's see... 12 of S1, all the rest are 22, let's call it 45min each... I make that 108hrs, or 4.5 days, if you didn't stop at all. (look, the plan was just to watch *some* of it tomorrow, OK?) Gosh. That's a lot of Buffy. If you could manage 4hrs in an evening, which is not unreasonable, it'd take 27 evenings to get through it.

I haven't seen any of S7 yet, cos of not having Sky. Marna is tempting me with DivX.

Well, our place is chaos also, so this is unlikely to be a problem. Whenabouts? Sarah's coming round here early (plan involves pre-Buffy rats & Chalet School books), but Kitty can't make it till 8. We might want to get food in?

Ah, go on, come anyway. I won't be drinking much, cos of having to play viola at a wedding on Saturday, so you can join me in abstinence & then will be able to face flat-move horror with equanimity. (what do you mean "you need to do more packing"? Course you don't. However much you do there'll only be more on Sat morning *anyway* ;-) )

I have severe doubts about your Buffy plan. S1 is certainly the worst season, with all the cheesy crap he fears. Show him some peak good episodes, eg "Hush" and others as per atommickbrane's poll of a while back, then start him on S1 when he's already hooked.

All you need to do is spend your life at Marna+Sean's and get Buffied to the gills.

We considered this, but the trouble is that I'm not sure how good some of the best episodes *are* if you don't already know the characters, backstory etc. (&, obviously, I can't tell, though I *do* think that OMWF relies entirely on having watched long-term). I dunno; I was hooked from the start of S1 so I might be a bad judge. I do reckon that the first 2 of S1 aren't great, & it improves muchly after that. Hrm. Marna?

I think it might be better to start him with some choice epidodes from S2 & S3, myself. Band Candy, Dopplegangland, The Wish, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered, possibly Gingerbread. Maybe Hush (if you can bear to watch it).

There are plenty of good standalone episodes, and everyone's still at school in most of them, so it's not completely random. He's a bright kitten and should manage to slot in.

Evil Vamp Willow yay. And I haven't seen *any* of S3 in ages (& have seen S1 quite recently, so...).
Gingerbread has RATTIE! I can indeed bear to watch Hush, IMO it's one of the best. As long as people don't mind me squeaking whenever I see the Gentlemen & there's someone to hide behind :-)

It's not so much slotting things in, it's more that I suspect that as time has gone on they've relied more & more on the fact that you already have knowledge & expectations of the Buffyverse... But it isn't so bad in S2 or even S3, I guess. We can always provide brief background info if necessary :-)

Argh, want to watch Buffy DVDs now & must work!

I think it only starts to get complicated in S4 onwards - up till then there are shifts among the Scoobie-relationships but nothing *huge* happens. And there are plenty of Big-Bad-free episodes that stand alone quite well.

Oooh, I'm feeling all jealous now, 'cos I'd love to see Buffy all the way through from start to finish - I've seen lots of it, but not in order - and I find it *really* confusing.....

It takes *effort* to watch Buffy in order all the way through. Back in the early days you could zip through it with an episode a night for a few weeks.

Glasto: rjk and I are probably travelling over after work on Thursday (Caroline has that week off work too, and I don't want to overlap her by too many days), so won't be able to share the train up with you. We'll have to work out some way of meeting up once we're there though. Make sure you save us a space! (Hmm, must remember to buy tent :-)

Received Oxfam-Glasto-Stewarding acceptance letter this morning! Hurrah...

But I shall have to be there from Tuesday onwards or something daft like that, and will have lovely posh camping site (hot showers yum). However I will have my phone with me...

My rool of thumb used to be that the first episode of any Buffy season is pants. e.g. Anne (S3), Dracula (S5), When She Was Bad (S2). YMMV on S1, S4 (Freshman), S6 and S7.

Did the conversion work?! I refused to watch Buffy for ages, and then got so drunk that I couldn't move, at which point someone put on one of the vids, and I had no choice but to see it! And now I'm as obsessed as everyone else :)

Well, in the end he turned up very late due to work-stuff & thus only got to see Hush. But he didn't actively object, anyway, & did appear to enjoy it a bit... I shall inflict more on him at a later date! (also this is a good excuse for me to watch old Buffy which can only be good)
