2024 in review

(2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023)
1. What did you do in 2024 that you'd never done before?
Ran a Scout troop. And then a whole Scout group (ie I am manager, sort of, for Scouts/Cubs/Beavers/general overhead & admin). This was not something I intended to do! But L's troop was going to shut down otherwise so... It has been fun in places, and less fun in other places, and at least two very steep learning curves in close succession. The kids are having fun though & I do get to teach them to SET FIRE TO THINGS and use knives and axes, so that's good.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
My not-resolutions-more-aims hit rate this year: definitely achieved 8 (counting the book I wrote instead of the book I was going to write); mostly/partly achieved 4; didn't achieve 5/17 (0.47 : 0.24 : 0.29). As above, I wasn't planning to suddenly get involved in Scouts, which has taken up a lot of time & energy. Doing my shoulder in didn't help either.
2023: 0.65 : 0.12 : 0.24
2022: 0.75 : 0.05 : 0.2
2021: 0.67 : 0.17 : 0.17
2020: 0.65 : 0.22 : 0.13
2019: 0.58 : 0.24 : 0.17
2018: 0.72 : 0.17 : 0.11
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I can think of.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Mouseboks (James), very unexpectedly. I am still really sad and miss him.
5. What countries did you visit?
Scotland (for Worldcon).
6. What would you like to have in 2025 that you lacked in 2024?
An agent. A sense of being more relaxed about the things I'm doing even if I'm doing the same amount of them.
(Last year I wanted: An agent (still working on that then...). More time spent staring quietly into space (hahaha nope).)
7. What date from 2024 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I am bad with dates.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Taking over Scouts / getting up to speed at the required speed on all the various things. I've taken them camping 3 times and everything!
9. What was your biggest failure?
I totally abandoned not one but TWO books in favour of writing other books, but I'm not sure I'd count that as a failure.
My main goal for last year was to do less stuff / less external stuff, and I totally failed at that, so.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Did my shoulder in (actually turned out to be a bicep attachment point) and it took MONTHS and several osteopath appointments to recover. It's still not quite right but at least I can climb again.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
BangFace onesie!
And the velvet for the teal velvet jacket that I made. I am inordinately proud of it.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Lovely friends, doop, L, Pete.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
it's still: various people/public figures being horrible.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Therapy. Books. Worldcon.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Not sure I did tbh. It's been a busy year but often in a stressful sort of way. I did get quite excited about BangFace, and it was a great weekend.
16. What song will always remind you of 2024?
The Operation Mincemeat soundtrack (which is several songs; if I have to pick one, then probably Making A Man).
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? About the same, but differently arranged.
ii. thinner or fatter? Slightly fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? About the same.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Chilling the fuck out, in general.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying about Scout-related stuff. (As opposed to just doing the required things.)
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
As per usual, spent it in Bermondsey, with Pete and Marna (for the morning, before they went off to the boat) and doop and L. And then my parents & sister came over on Boxing Day. It was all very nice.
21. Did you fall in love in 2024?
No.
22. How many one-night stands?
None.
23. What was your favorite TV programme?
Rivals!
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Don't think so.
25. What was the best book you read?
I don't know! I haven't been tracking my reading this year. I have read a lot of stuff I liked though.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Operation Mincemeat.
27. What did you want and get?
Velvet jacket. BangFace onesie. (An election, I suppose, which is what I said last year that I wanted and didn't get.)
28. What did you want and not get?
Drugs that will actually fix Sidney T Hund rather than just covering up her dodgy back legs :( (she's nearly 16 now and very wobbly)
29. What was your favourite film of this year?
I don't think I've seen any new films at all.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 46, and I had a party. It was lovely! (There will be no party this year, because Sid can't cope, and she can't cope with staying in someone's room for the duration, and we certainly can't get anyone else to have her overnight these days since she's up in the night so much.)
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Nothing I can think of.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2023?
BangFace onesie.
33. What kept you sane?
Extra sleep whenever possible.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
None.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Many things.
36. Who did you miss?
maia. Richard (who was in London this week, which was lovely).
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I have fond feelings for my fellow Scout leaders!
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2024
sometimes you just have to do the thing.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year
??
40. Did you enjoy this year?
Yes, mostly, when I wasn't getting stressed out about it. I am hoping to do less of the being stressed about things this coming year.
