On Linux Glyn uses mplayer with the -dumpstream option. He's tried to teach me how to use it and failed, so if you need any more detail then you'll have to ask him.
Or even better, use mencoder (comes with mplayer) to record the stream out to some more friendly format, eg. MP3 or Ogg.
Give mencoder the same playback parameters as mplayer, then add the encoding options. eg. (off the top of my head) mencoder "http://www.abc.net.au/streaming/triplej.asf" -o recorded_triplej.mp3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=standard

You'll also want a copy of Audacity, to edit out any whitespace at the beginning/end.
