Climate Camp update
Aug. 5th, 2008 10:19 amI got a whole 10 hours of sleep last night. This makes me happy. Police situation is still the same, but they've responded to our proposal (that they clear offsite & we let them patrol, roughly). The response isn't all we could have hoped for, but the site meeting is discussing it atm and hopefully it's still possible to get a resolution.
On the more important business of, y'know, what we're actually here for, I'm off to a workshop on off-grid renewables in 15 minutes, and possibly something about soil building as a climate change solution this afternoon. And I was speaking to one of the legal observer team yesterday who said they're short on people & would I like to come along to one of their training sessions? So that's early evening - I'm only onsite till Thursday morning so may not be that much use this time, but it'll be a skill learnt for another time. And I'm down to facilitate tomorrow morning's neighbourhood meeting (the camp is divided into geographical neighbourhoods for camping, with each having a living-area marquee, kitchen, etc, as well as the central stuff. London is pretty large.)
So that's all the good stuff, the stuff that we're actually here for. Workshops, and talks, and building things - I spent the weekend building benches and tables and helping out with the London kitchen. And building connections and relationships. I've met some really fantastic people here. There's a massive attitude of encouraging people to get involved, and any time you do do something (even if it's as simple as fixing a thing that needs fixed, or filling up the big water carrier on the drinks table), it feels appreciated. People are really quick to say "that's fantastic, thank you, you're doing a great job" to each other, which is amazing & really makes it easy to get stuck in. (I haven't done anything remotely like this in years, but I wound up as London spokesperson for yesterday's emergency meetings - which was stressful but really rewarding. And see above about all the other stuff.)
Anyway, I should go find out about soil building! And focus on that & not all yesterday's stress.
