Apparently I am going through 6GB of internets a month. HOW.

(OK, that did include 2 x Debian installs, and I do WFH, and so forth. BUT STILL.)

Wow. I'm assuming you don't do things like downloading tons of torrents and such?

Modern internet usage is kind of heavy, at any rate. YouTube, people slinging around videos and audio files like nobody's business, and sites so full of content...

Not much torrenting, but occasional iTunes downloads & so forth. Plus 1.5 installs of Debian which will have been getting on for 2GB, so I suppose it's not outrageous... It just seems like a lot, especially when I'm paying per gig :-/

If you haven't discovered it yet, http://whirlpool.net.au/ is where you go to find cheap(er) internets in Australia. There's quite a good tool there to tell it how much you want a month, what you're prepared to pay, etc. Look for the ones that allow quick switching from one provider to another.

Unfortunately there's no phone line in this flat (& I'm leaving in another 9 weeks now so definitely not worth sorting that out!) so I'm limited to mobile broadband; & PAYG due to the length-of-time issue. After an abortive effort with Virgin (unbelievably shit, for the record), I switched to Telstra - expensive, but the connection *works* most of the time, so...
