So, we had a second day in Boston, which we spent walking the Freedom Trail (it has a red brick line in the pavement to follow & goes through all the War of Independence stuff), walking through the park, visiting the library, & then going for dinner/BOOZE with my mate Mike who's been seconded out here. And lo! it was fun. Especially as I've not really had a chance to chat properly to Mike for ages. We're hoping to catch up with him again on Sunday night, when we're back in Boston to catch the plane home again Monday morning.
Then off to NY on Tuesday, via cheap bus (10 bucks - cheers to Jesse for telling us about cheap bus!). Spent Tuesday afternoon having a picnic in Central Park, then wandering round the park for a few hours. Which was really nice & relaxing. Both Pete & myself have been to NY before, & done most of the touristy stuff, so our aim was not to worry too much about zooming round doing things. We inadvertently found the castle thingy, which made me happy, as well :-) Then met up with Pete's friend Joe & his girlfriend for dinner. At a tapas place, which sadly was not very vegan-friendly, but I managed to find enough to eat.
Spent Wednesday SHOPPING hurrah. I spent what probably qualifies as too much money, but hey. Wound up with many nice new clothes, so I don't care. At least, not till the Barclaycard bill arrives. Pete was remarkably tolerant about being dragged round large swathes of New York for an afternoon, & more so after he managed to find himself a new pair of Converses (identical, of course, to the *previous* pair of Converses) & some CDs. Stopped for a couple of drinks at a bar, & wound up listening to a local writers' group reading some of their stuff. Some of it was, of course, truly dire, but 2 of 'em were reasonably good. And it seemed a suitable thing to be doing in the East Village :-) Had dinner at a vegan-sustainable-etc place. I reckoned it was OK, Pete was much less keen. I agreed with him that it would have been much better had they not been the sort of place that *disapproved* of such things as fat (of any sort), salt, etc. Maybe I just have unhealthy eating habits. Nice to have seitan, though - I like it but can never be bothered acquiring/making it at home.
Update: I forgot - later in the evening we went out to a club, which was supposed to be indie/alternative. Couple of live bands, of which the first was OK but the second actually good (reminded me variously of Weezer & Supergrass, including a *blatant* steal from a Supergrass song). Sadly nobody appeared to be interested in dancing when the club bit was occurring, though, bah. So we went home.
Today we went up to Saks (all too expensive) & Tiffany's (obviously too expensive, but enjoyed looking at shiny things, both of the pretty & tacky varieties. And there was a nice photo of Audrey Hepburn, though sadly no actual Audrey Hepburn). Then had lunch at *another* sustainable-food place, though this wasn't vegan (though was vegan-friendly) & clearly approved fully of fat & salt & suchlike & thus was much better. Hurrah. Then headed off to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which was most interesting, & I acquired exciting social-history books (have a slight social-history obsession, I must confess).
Decided to go & walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn. Whereupon there was rather an extreme case of Small World Syndrome, when halfway across we ran into Pete's brother. Admittedly we were aware that he was in the US, but he was supposed to be in New Jersey somewhere, & anyway, running into your *brother* in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge is pretty damn SWS. Most peculiar. On reaching Brooklyn, we found a) a nice bar with good beer (Magic Hat brewery appears to be Good), & b) a nice Thai restaurant with good food. Hurrah.
Tomorrow - off to Philadelphia via another cheap bus.
