So, the gas man (whose name is Bill) came round on Monday evening, prodded at things, & said that he needed to go get a bit of solid pipe in order to move the meter down. Then phoned half an hour later to say that the supplier had no appropriate pipe, he'd pick it up in the week & come back. Splendid.

No word from him by yesterday, so I phoned again. He informed me that he'd been on the phone to Corgi, who said that Under No Circumstances was he allowed to touch the gas meter. I said "but the Transco man said you could!" & he said "But Corgi say I can't", & since Corgi license him, this is really fair enough. So I said OK, we would have the fight with Transco/London Energy about relocating the meter, & in the meantime let's forge ahead with connecting up the cooker (this requires running a pipe from the meter through the wall into the kitchen, basically). When, I enquired, could this be managed? Friday morning, first thing. Argh. This is No Good as we need to start fitting cabinets Thursday (i.e. today).

Further discussion ensued, which wound up with two conclusions. One, he is Really Very Sure that the existing pipe running under the kitchen floor is sound (this makes the job much easier if true, as he doesn't have to run pipes round the walls, merely hook up the other end of the under-floor pipe which is close to the meter, albeit through a breezeblock wall). But what if it *isn't*, I pressed. Thus, Conclusion Two, that since our cabinets are the sort that stand on little legs and have a plinth in front, No Problem, if need be he can run the pipes under the cabinets once they're in situ. Good stuff.

So, hurrah hurrah, Dad & Pete can fit cabinets today, & the gas will be hooked up tomorrow at 8am, & all is still on target. The Schedule will be happy.

Excitingly, the fitting of the cabinets today starts with building one of the cabinets in situ around a mess of pipes (rather than building 'em separately & then just putting them on the floor & attaching to the wall). Having spent some time last night with Dad establishing firstly that this was the best available option, and secondly how exactly this was to be done (there is a Plan, on the back of an envelope, which is where all the best Plans are to be found), I am actually quite sorry to be missing it. I am sure Pete will give me a full & graphic description of the horror this evening.

Yesterday, I built drawers, and a cabinet. And assisted with pelmet-construction. Go me.

Thanks for posting the Flanders and Swann, if only for finding out through a link that Amazon now have a 3CD set with EVERYTHING that Tom Lehrer's ever done, which will be making a hole in my pocket over the next few days.
