I still have to get mine a present anyhow. Chocolate can be safely ruled out, as can nice bath stuff so I guess that's a book. Again. Or flowers. Again. Mmmph.

They're right that Mothering Sunday is now often referred to as Mothers' Day over here. But wrong in that it's still celebrated on the traditional Mothering Sunday (I didn't know it was the 4th Sunday in Lent, but I knew it varied with Easter etc). Trust me, UK mothers will be expecting their card/present/flowers *this* weekend :-)

IIRC, it used to be that Mothering Sunday was the day on which girls who were in service would be allowed to go home to see their mothers. They'd sometimes be given a cake or similar from the kitchen of their employer to take home, or castoff clothes for the kids still at home. They'd often pick flowers as they walked to their family home - it's spring, after all. Many churches will still hand out flowers to children on Mothering Sunday, to give to their mother - mine certainly did when I was little.

the reason that it's the day when you get ot go home to see mother is that it's also 'laetare Sunday', a specially joyful day in the middle of lent when you get to totally forget it's Lent and have a bit of fun.

Is this a daughter-mother thing? I don't see any blokes bothering, and I never do. So it's more than just another invented special card day, at least in .uk?

Not that I know of; I can remember giving my mum handmade cards and the like from a very early age.. and I now have this image in my head of making up a card with daffodils on the front of it when I was 6 for mothering sunday.

Well, it's hideously commercialised, like everything else, but it's not quite as gift-shop-invented as some of the others.

IME a lot of men do send mother's day cards ... but equally a lot of women don't. I guess it's between you and your mum, innit... I know my mum wouldn't be offended if I didn't send anything on mother's day (because I don't always remember!), but equally she's certainly not going to complain if I send her flowers. :)

IMO it degenerated into a happy hallmark day years ago ... but my mother would be "terribly disappointed" (that's catholic slang for very pissed off) if I didn't acknowledge it. She'll no doubt suggest we delay going out for a M.D. meal until I'm back from holiday, or something, as i'm going to be tied up with my assignment until i go away. :/
