Drive-by post: recommend me some music!

Just back from Climate Camp. Have large to-do list, but also many plans. And a cold (which may just be hay-related irritation: much of camp furniture was constructed largely or wholly from haybales, and it was v windy).

I like Muse a lot. Juli is good too, which I thought of because of your name. Uh...

You're probably well aware of them both, but Abney Park and Deine Laikaien are both currently in my "pretty fine" list.

I would recommend something I'm currently listening to, but the CDs I have in the office today are Meat Loaf (Bat ... 2), a compilation entitled Gothic Party Time, PWEI (Live at Weirds ...) and Annihilator, and I reckon you either know of those or wouldn't want to! [grin]

What sort of music do you want?? I've been loving quite a few things lately, but I'm not sure how many, if any, would suit you.

I'm having a Spinal Tap moment! What, you don't like free jazz? :-)

I should probably make a post about fun things I've been enjoying of late. Some thoughts off the top of my head:

- still loving PJ Harvey & John Parish album 'A Woman A Man Walked By'.
- have been listening to Little Boots album (bought solely because of Phil Oakey) over and over, am amazed at how good it is but then, I do like some shiny synth-pop
- gloomy 'post-rock' Italian band Giardini Di Miro album 'Dividing Opinions', which I got for £1.99 on Oxfam! Bargain.
- 2 cd collection 'An England Story' (a history of British MCs) has some absolutely cracking tracks on it, particularly the stuff with Est'elle, Warrior Queen, Doctor & Davinche, Skibadee and the lovely Roots Manuva. I was quite excited to find it in the library, and [livejournal.com profile] ultraruby & [livejournal.com profile] dr_f_dellamorte assured me it was tip-top. They were right!
- Sieben aka Matt Howden does absolutely amazing solo fiddle-based 'alternative' dark folky stuff. I'm seen him live a couple of times now and he blows me away.
- the Mastodon 'Crack The Skye' album is rather fun...
- I'm listening to loads of Grace Jones right now, her recent album 'Hurricane' along with a lot of the older tracks. She never gets old.
- do you already have Ladytron's 'Velocifero'? That's STILL on my playlist, even after so long. I have to stop myself from listening to it so I don't get obsessed, and yes, that's 2 years on, nearly?

There's probably loads more, but that'll do for starters, right? I can play any or all these things at you if we happen to be in the same vicinity!

Eric Dolphy's "Out To Lunch" is pretty good. Ornette Coleman's not bad either.

I think you might like Little Dragon album - Swedish (I think) minimalist indiepop that are just on the right side of twee for me to like them. That track linked to above was on the end of the Ellen Allien Boogybytes mix.

Have you heard Phil's new song, which is literally about his infatuation with my ex-girlfriend? Anyway, our music tastes have diverged over the years, but I am currently, and have been for some time, applying my curse to The All New Adventures of Us. They won't make it big, because I like them. But they should, they're like generic modern boy indie except good.

This week I have mostly been listening to Hard-Fi. Obvious, I know, but what can you do?

How about Wild Billy Childish and the Musicians of the British Empire? Lowfi old school stuff, good if you like Mr Bragg I'd say.

I concur with Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Have also been listening to Fanfarlo, Cymbals Eat Guitars and The Duckworth Lewis Method (which I'm sure you are already aware of).
