Anyone know of any charity that can take old (but still working) computers, monitors, etc? The computers are I think around Pentium 2 or thereabouts; the monitors are standard sorts of monitors.

A quick google has found Computers for Charity & Computers for Charities (the latter is a charity itself & appears to have some base requirements; it seems that the former isn't and doesn't). Anyone know anything about either?

I also suspect that if anyone wants an elderly computer/monitor, & can collect from South Ken (Imperial College, specifically), then they're likely welcome to one, though I'd have to check with Ivan (boss).

If there is a system box with something greater than a Pentium-133 or -166 in it I'd be interested in one (an ex-Imperial student writes) to 'upgrade' my router ...

Another IC bod. A lot of us around.

I am about to go the otherway by decommissioning my old PC based router to replace it with a dedicated Linksys device picked up in a car boot sale.

I don't think I can help with Juliet's original question as every charity I know has stopped accepting anything electrical.

Here we line up, ex-ICs all...

I found that people in the LETS were more open-minded about 'obsolete' computer equipment than any charity I approached. It all depends upon whether you understand slim yet functional applications, or not...

SFAIAA though, none of the stand-alone devices can copy with multiple internal networks (ie. I run 192.168.76.x, 192.168.176.x and 192.168.0.x internally spread over a number of machines) instead putting all internal links on the same subnet. If one did I'd certainly think of changing over.

So far as electrical equipment donations to charities generally are concerned, there are often issues about electrical (PAT) safety, which is why many won't take stuff now.

If you've met him yet, ask Ali at work: he told Brighty about someone, who then came to her flat to pick up her old PC. I think he was a former slave going to write his memoirs, so likely to be good causes. I'll ask Brighty about it tonight.

Computer Aid International (http://www.computer-aid.org/) are based in the same building as my work (Marlborough Road, N19) and seem to be a genuine charity in need of kit.

I've often thought that having some sort of charity for old computer bits would be a good - there must be plenty of people with parts or complete machines that are not worth the effort to sell (I have my own collection of computer bits aging in the corner), but are still perfectly reasonable machines and conceivably useful to either someone who is short on money or perhaps has a use for a spare machine. The only time I've seen computers in charity shops is ancient 8 bit stuff though.

There's a shop at the end of my road which sells second hand computers, and they seem to collect from businesses, so maybe there's a shop of that sort in London that would be willing to collect a load of computers.

Inside Out take any Pentiums and newer - they teach prisoners how to revamp them, and then sell them/give them good homes. Have to take them to Wood Green though, unless you've got a few.

Speak to Ali: he has contacts with the refugee council. He arranged for my old pc to be given to someone who was a slave for 10 years!

Really sad to hear about your rattie, btw.
