Old computers for charities?
May. 11th, 2004 12:46 pmAnyone know of any charity that can take old (but still working) computers, monitors, etc? The computers are I think around Pentium 2 or thereabouts; the monitors are standard sorts of monitors.
A quick google has found Computers for Charity & Computers for Charities (the latter is a charity itself & appears to have some base requirements; it seems that the former isn't and doesn't). Anyone know anything about either?
I also suspect that if anyone wants an elderly computer/monitor, & can collect from South Ken (Imperial College, specifically), then they're likely welcome to one, though I'd have to check with Ivan (boss).

Date: 2004-05-11 11:52 am (UTC)I am about to go the otherway by decommissioning my old PC based router to replace it with a dedicated Linksys device picked up in a car boot sale.
I don't think I can help with Juliet's original question as every charity I know has stopped accepting anything electrical.

Date: 2004-05-11 12:09 pm (UTC)SFAIAA though, none of the stand-alone devices can copy with multiple internal networks (ie. I run 192.168.76.x, 192.168.176.x and 192.168.0.x internally spread over a number of machines) instead putting all internal links on the same subnet. If one did I'd certainly think of changing over.
So far as electrical equipment donations to charities generally are concerned, there are often issues about electrical (PAT) safety, which is why many won't take stuff now.

Date: 2004-05-12 11:22 pm (UTC)There's a shop at the end of my road which sells second hand computers, and they seem to collect from businesses, so maybe there's a shop of that sort in London that would be willing to collect a load of computers.
