[livejournal.com profile] catsgomiaow mentioned ID & CitizenCard & whatnot for getting into Glastonbury. Note that you *don't* have to get a CitizenCard if you don't want one[0] to get onsite. A photo driving licence is also acceptable, as is your passport. Passports haven't been mentioned on the website because they don't want to promote them since the police think they're too valuable for people to be carting around the festival with them. If you do take yours, you should put it in the lockup immediately on arrival.

ID info here and also here.

In other news, it occurs to me that I used to have a little tin for putting fagends in (they don't biodegrade, & the cows don't like them, so every single one dropped on the floor has to be picked up again before the cows can come back), but have lost it. But! these people sell little pocket ashtrays for £2.99 apiece. I shall be acquiring one - anyone else want one & I can get a job lot? (specify design if bothered)

I also need a folding chair (knees increasingly buggered...) & a space blanket to put under the sleeping bags. Must go camping-shop shopping!

[0] I explicitly don't because I don't trust the Home Office not to claim that CCard takeup rates represent support for compulsory ID card

If you don't fancy doing an online order, I have a fab little brushed aluminium Muji one. However, there website is teh slow, and I can't quite decide which category it would be in, so....

I'll use a film canister instead of a tin - the tins, I found, don't work well with wind.

Oh no, now you're reminding me of the Guardian letters page and their long-running film canister correspondence.
That's better than most of the suggestions they've printed, mind.

Knee-worries. Would crutches or a stick help any, because it might be worth looking into hiring some for the weekend if they'll make a difference? It is so much more walking....

Light and comfortable (so you don't bugger up your back taking care of your knees) folding chair is creature! I volunteer for some chair or other stuff carrying if needed. (Except not if I've got lots of stuff myself because then I will fall over.)

Thanks for the information about ID. My CitizenCard arrived yesterday, I'm afraid: lacking a driving licence I assumed it was the only way in, but I wouldn't have taken my passport in any case. So I have contributed in a small way to voluntary support for a compulsory scheme.

I'm wondering if provisional licence counts :-) I'd definitely be a bit nervous about taking passport.

Mostly I only tend to have a reasonably small amount of cash, return train ticket if getting train, and one credit or debit card with me in terms of valuables, and to keep them with me at all times. If I did bring a passport I probably would put it in the lockup, but that would certainly add a level of inconvenience!

Good to know that addresses on driving licences don't matter - TM still lives in Bethnal Green according to his one.

True, but beware that you can be fined £1000 for not informing the DVLA of a change of address (it's free - just fill in the details on the back of the licence and send it off and they'll send you a licence with your new details).

Or get a proof of age card from http://www.portman-group.org.uk/campaigns/52.asp
- apparently it takes 28 days. You just have to be over 18, get someone professional to sign it who's not a relative and put a couple of passport photos on the form.

Sigh. Suddenly everyone seems to be talking about Glastonbury and making tent and van and wellie plans... wish I was going!

I thought I wasn't arsed with outdoor festivals any more, but I think that was just V.

If you're really in need of Glasto goodness and can get your paws on an Orange phone, this is worth a try - Sean got Kat's ticket that way last year.

I wouldn't trust the Home Office either. Their logic would be absurd, considering that I imagine most people are getting the Citizen Card because a passport is considered too valuable to lose (as the police recommend) - yet the compulsory ID card and passport will cost far more than a passport currently does (and probably be required more often than a passport currently is)!

Indeed, most the people I've heard who seem in favour of an "ID card" seem to do so only because they view it as a more convenient and cheaper form of ID, compared with a passport..
