I'm working from home today, which is entirely unnecessary as have bike, will cycle. Am just lazy. I initially felt a bit guilty about this, what with all this "show those damn terrorists they haven't affected us!" spirit floating round. Then I realised that if the idea is to not let the terrorists affect us, then clearly I *should* act as normal i.e. seize any opportunity that presents itself to stay home. Hurrah! (also I *do* have a GP appt this afternoon so would have had to come home early anyway; in fact, WFH means that I actually *will* do a full day's work due to not losing 80min to commuting).

P & I are off out clubbing this evening, to Buttoned Down Disco, which looks like it might be fun.

Edit: there was something here about yesterday's events, but have now cut it as it appeared open to misinterpretation in a couple of different ways & I can't face trying to rewrite it more clearly as am feeling frazzled. Apart from: " 'quaking in terror' my fucking arse" which I think is clear enough.

I am quite frankly sick of people quoting fucking statistics about this.

I only nearly died once on the way to work this morning, hurrah. I *really* hate that junction.

I was thinking the same: "This is the best the fearsome al-Qaeda can do? Come on." I was expecting the inevitable al-Qaeda attack to be spectacular and involve at least hundreds of deaths, if not turn much of central London into Pripyat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pripyat%2C_Ukraine)-on-Thames by means of a dirty bomb/one of the hundreds of ex-Soviet backpack nukes unaccounted for. It's no comfort to those who lost loved ones in it, of course, but it's almost a relief that the Brigades of Death's worst turned out to be a relative fizzer.

I agree! Quaking in terror? I think most people just see it as an excuse to come in to work late.

Like me. I'm working from home too. And frankly just because I never normally get to work from home. Although I'll be going into the office after lunch, because I actually have to get some stuff done ;-)

I too joined the ranks of "working from home, not because I have to, but because I can". And it makes up somewhat for the time I spent getting home yesterday when I should have been here doing Stuff.

(Hiya, remember me? :P )

They kept mentioning the london attack here on TV every hour (I was woken up thanks to a phone call from my mum shouting on me to watch tv.. she's now trying to convince me to not go back to london, but it's not really working for her..), hmmm, where was I? Right.. anyways, They interviewed the Israeli embassador in London, and he said something like "The difference between London and Israel is, that in Israel, when something like that happens, people just move on. Here, it's as if life stopped."
On any case, I shall return to London real soon, send hi to everyone for me :P lol

Terror? Pah. It's only an Amber Alert here.

There's a difference between emotions and ethics.

Shock and sympathy aren't things that need to be rationed out in a calculated way and telling people how they should react emotionally to something generally isn't effective because it's not something they have a great deal of control over. I have a different emotional reaction if I hear someone has been murdered to if I hear they have died through natural causes for instance. Maybe I shouldn't but I do and I suspect that I'm not alone.

Resources on the other hand are different, and should be used in a considered way based on your exact personal ethics (i.e. it might be sensible to put more resources into preventing road accidents than terrorist attacks).

200 isn't the appropriate number to compare against, because many of those 200 people won't be previously healthy people dying unexpectedly.

OK some people went home early from work... forgive us Mr Israeli Ambassador, it's just that when the Central Line isn't running, it makes it hard to get home.
